A Cartoon of Mahler

Working Paper: C.F. Kahnt plate numbers 1888–1920

This list was prepared to aid the challenging process of compiling an evidence-based chronological listing  of the exemplars of the numerous undated copies of the songs by Mahler which, although initially issued separately from 1905, were eventually also published, from 1917, under the collective title Sieben Lieder aus letzter Zeit. The publishing rights to the songs were acquired by C.F. Kahnt in April 1905 and from 1910 until 1939 they were also distributed under license by Universal-Edition. For a number of reasons the creation of such a listing of these songs is particularly challenging:

  • the copies of Kahnt issues only list a copyright date (on title pages and front wrappers, though these can change) and, unlike firms such as Peters and Universal-Edition, did not include date codes on the advertisements included in their publications;

  • no archival ledgers from C.F. Kahnt that give details of dates and sizes of print runs have been located.

So, apart from those printed copies issued by Kahnt that can be unambiguously identified as first impressions of the first edition, most copies supplied by Kahnt are undated. This is also generally true of the UE issues: most do not carry adverts for UE publications (this may have been a condition of the license), and when they do, they rarely include a date code. On the other hand, the UE Verlagsbücher survive, and provide details of dates and sizes of print runs (though the entries are by no means always accurate or unambiguous) so the existence of separate UE impressions is at least documented.

The creation of a chronological listing of surviving copies therefore has to rely on other types of evidence, which can be contradictory, and the interpretation of which is inevitably subject to uncertainty:

  • Title pages: the variants in content (publications listed, prices, publisher's name, other information), particularly in the passe-partout title pages employed for editions of full scores and piano-vocal scores of individual songs, can offer a broad means of ordering and approximately dating copies (but see the note on wrappers, below).

  • Wrappers: these did not use the same paper as the body of the copy and it was usually coloured rather than white or cream. They are lacking in many surviving copies.

    • Front wrapper: Kahnt issues of full scores and piano-vocal scores of individual songs always adopted the general passe-partout design of the title page, but, confusingly the content of the title page and front wrapper of a particular copy may represent quite different states of that design. In such cases the wrapper is always demonstrably later in date.
      The UE issues are always provided with a UE wrapper design: two types (A and B) were in use during this period, type B being introduced c. 1919 after which type A was phased out.

    • Front wrapper verso and back wrapper recto: in Kahnt issues these normally carried whole page advertisements; they were always blank in UE issues.

    • Back wrapper verso: in Kahnt issues these seem always to have carried whole page advertisements; in UE issues they very occasionally carried UE adverts, but were normally blank.

  • Advertisements: both publishers used a limited number of standard whole-page designs, the content of which can at least suggest a terminus post quem or, if it changed overtime, may offer evidence for chronological ordering.

  • Hofmeister: the listings of new music publications in the Musikalisch-literarischer Monatsbericht über neue Musikalien, musikalische Schriften und Abbildungen published by Friedrich Hofmeister and his successors from 1829 onwards are a guide to probable dates of publication, usually within +/- 4 weeks of the date of the listing, though wider discrepancies are certainly possible. A major limitation is that new impressions of previously listed editions were not recorded, and even new editions (e.g. of new transpositions, or with new text translations) were not consistently listed, so that at best Hofmeister documents the later publication history of a song very incompletely.

  • Plate numbers: these can give an indication of the order in which the plate numbers were assigned to a particular publication format (e.g. score, parts, vocal score) of a work. They are not necessarily a precise indication of the date of engraving, printing or publication.

The list below includes all known publications by C. F. Kahnt of Mahler's music ordered by plate number and interleaved with a selection of other publications issued by C.F. Kahnt that were listed in the Hofmeister Monatsbericht (in green). In most cases where a Mahler publication was not listed in Hofmeister, a conjectural editorial date has been supplied in square brackets. In a few instances a plate number appears to be inconsistent with the date of the Hofmeister listing (which appears in red):

* The study score and full score of the Sixth Symphony share the same plate number, although they represent different versions of the Symphony: the second version (1906) was only issued in full score format. The plate number was presumably assigned in the summer of 1905; copies of the study score format (i.e. the first version, PS1) may have been available by March 1906 when the publication was announced in Hofmeister. After the first performance Mahler revised the work, so the plates were revised and corrected and the full score of the second version (PF1) issued in the autumn of 1906. However the print materials from which the study score was produced were only revised to place the scherzo third in the sequence of movements: the orchestration and other details are unaltered (see PS1c).
