Mahler – Symphony No. 5

Performances 1904–1911

Symphony No. 5 – Main page

Catalogue Homepage

This list seeks to be comprehensive in scope, but at present falls short of that ideal – details of some of the performances have yet to be located, and other performances may well await discovery. I am most grateful  to Michael Bosworth and Knud Martner for generously sharing their research with me, and to colleagues in various organisations (see Acknowledgements) who have kindly provided additional information and help.

In the following listings the details of works performed are given, where possible, in the form used in the programme, handbill or advertisement (in that order of preference). Where none of the primary sources listed above are available, the details are given in English. The Martner numbers are from the 2010 edition (Martner2) of his listing of concerts conducted by Mahler. For ease of identification performances directed by conductors other than Mahler appear against a grey background. Where the placing of the concert interval is know, it is represented by a horizontal line in the listing of the programme items.

The performances lists in the catalogue exclude final rehearsals (Generalproben) even though these might be open to the public and listed in publicity. However, in the case of the two concerts given by the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall, Boston, the programme books offer strong evidence that the final rehearsals were public events.

HLG reports that one performance (presumably the first in the series) lasted 55 minutes and the New York performance, on 15 February 1906, 59 minutes. This suggests that Gericke may have made substantial cuts (see HLGIII, 313, n115).

The symphony was also heard at an open rehearsal in Boston, at 14:15 on 2 February 1906.
