In the second and third systems on the page Mahler erroneously wrote the the piano part on the third and fourth staves, and so had to write the cello part on the fifth stave. In both cases he signalled this error with 'N.B.' written in pencil in the l.h. margin.

4

'Mit Dδmpfer' added in pencil to vla (b. 139/140), vn (b. 141).

5

'Ohne Dδ[mpfer]' added in pencil to vln (b. 139/140) and 'Ohne Dδmpfer' to vla (b. 141). 'Ritenuto' (b. 149) appears only in the piano part. 'Mit Dδmpfer' added in pencil to vn (b. 159), vla (b. 150).

6

The piano part is very sketchily indicated, in part with the use of figured bass.

7

In the performance instruction over the vln part, b. 218–19, the initial word ('ungemein') has been crossed through in pencil.

8

'Morendo' (b. 229) is a pencil addition.

9

Neither of the scholarly editions (PR1973, SWSBIII) transcribe the passage bb. 26.2–33 completely. PR1973 describes the notation (pencil) as unreadable. It is indeed faint, but clearly visible in the online facsimile of the page provided by US-NYpm
