A Cartoon of Mahler

Symphony No. 1

Autograph Full score – AF2

US-NHub Osborn Collection, MS 506

Fascicle structure

1

All folio numbers are editorial

2

Unless otherwise stated, the writing implement is either black ink pen [i] or pencil [p]

3

The discrepancy is due to the fact that AF2 has one extra bar: b. 174 of the final version is a conflation of two bars in AF2 that was effected at a later stage in the movement's evolution.

4

So, the interpolated leaves contain a passage nine bars longer that the original layer as counted by Weidig.

5

So this second interpolation was either exactly the same length as the passage it replaced, or, more likely, it had been inserted before Weidig made his bar count.

6

The fact that the discrepancy between Weidig's bar count and the final bar numbers is only four bars at the end reflects the fact that bb. 728 and 730 each conflate passages of three bars into one.
