Three staves are visible, the top two of which contain the main theme of the first movement (i.e. the melody from 'Ging heut' morgen übers Feld') as a two-part canon, in D major: it first appears in this form in the Symphony at bb. 108–113, transposed into A major. Below the the third stave, violet ink, unidentified hand: Gustav Mahler Handschrift.
