Notes

Although this 33-bar sketch appears on the conjugate leaf that originally formed the back wrapper of the autograph of the Piano Quartet movement in A minor, the distant tonal relationship between the two movements makes it very unlikely that they were intended for the same multi-movement work. If either of these works was eventually completed it is possible that it was the work entered (unsuccesfully) by Mahler in 1877 for the competition organised by the St Petersburg Society for Chamber Music in 1877. The score of his entry was not returned.
